Betty Wuerfel Armstrong

Betty Wuerfel Armstrong passed away peacefully on September 28, 2017, hand-in-hand with the love of her life, best friend and husband of 65 years, Donald L. Armstrong. She was 87 years old.

Betty will be remembered by all who knew her for her love, compassion, creativity and humor, traits she freely shared with her large family, her many friends and anyone she happened to meet. She had a unique gift for seeing and appreciating the beauty in the world around her, and she always enjoyed a good laugh. Children were especially dear to Betty. In addition to her role as loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother to her own brood, she was fondly regarded as being a second mom to innumerable friends and relatives.

Betty was an accomplished and prolific artist who used her talent to brighten and enrich the lives of others. She had a special aptitude and affection for children’s portraits, but was skilled in a wide variety of mediums, creating everything from commissioned works for universities to hand-knit dolls and sweaters for her grandkids. Her original pen-and-ink Christmas cards were a highlight of the holiday season for decades.

Beyond her work as an artist, she was an avid reader and lover of crossword puzzles and Scrabble games. She often said that she didn’t understand the concept of being bored. To her, there were always more projects waiting in the wings, always something more to create for someone she loved.

In addition to her beloved husband Donald, Betty is survived by her children, Ann (Kim) Pahlas, Donald L. Jr. (Cheri) Armstrong, Douglas (Maureen FitzPatrick) Armstrong, Meg (Jon) McKinney, Andrew (Heather) Armstrong, William (Mary Rose) Armstrong, and Michael (Leigh) Armstrong. Dear sister-in-law of Peggy Wuerfel, Joan Armstrong and Barbara Armstrong. Betty is further survived by 14 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.

Funeral Mass 11:00 AM Tuesday, October 3, 2017 in the Chapel of St. John the Evangelist at St. John’s on the Lake, 1840 N. Prospect Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53202.
