BEVERLY JOAN TETER

Beverly Teter was born on August 28, 1931, to John (a/k/a Jack) and Bernice Teter (nee Hammargren) at St. Mary’s Hospital, Milwaukee. She was predeceased by her infant brother, John Jr. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Bernice and Thomas Tresemer, grandchildren Jeremy Tresemer and Lindsay (Andrew) Schultz, and three great-grandchildren, Fletcher, Truman, and Sinclare.

Bev moved to Minnesota in the early years then returned to Milwaukee. After a few years of home schooling, she settled into Bartlett Avenue Elementary School in 5th grade, graduated from there in 8th grade, and then attended Riverside High School, graduating with the class of January 1949.

With her parents, she traveled the country for two months in 1950 promoting Jack’s musical recordings.

In March of 1951, Bev joined the U.S. Air Force and, in 1956, was honorably discharged and gave birth to her daughter Bernice in September.

Bev joined the American Legion in 1956 and was the first woman in the state of Wisconsin to be elected commander of a predominantly male legion post (North Shore Post #331) in 1964. She was elected County Commander in 1974. She was also a past State Director of the 20/4 Honor Society of Women Legionnaires (1967).

In 1966, as a delegate to the National American Legion Convention in Washington, D.C., she shook hands with President Lyndon Baines Johnson after he signed the resolution authorizing the Vietnam veterans to join the organization.

Bev has been a member of the Milwaukee Press Club since women were first admitted as members. She also served in the active Army Reserves (84th Division) during the Vietnam era.

After 29 years at Milwaukee City Hall, working first with the Housing Authority and then as Senior License Clerk with the Common Council/City Clerk’s office, she retired in 1986.

Between 1986 and 1995, Bev traveled a bit, then started a part time job with a title insurance company. Prior to that time, she also traveled 14 consecutive years to New Orleans for the Mardi Gras festivities.

Having been confirmed in the Catholic faith in 1999, she became a parish member of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. She was on the parish council and served as Eucharistic minister to shut-ins when called upon. At many weekday morning Masses, she served as a sacristan/acolyte/Eucharistic minister, setting up before and cleaning up after Mass. She also counted collections of the week along with other team members.

She lived in downtown Milwaukee from 1974 to 2016, where Bev claimed to have had ample access to culture and entertainment that, although quite eclectic, met all her spiritual and intellectual needs.

The family wishes to thank the helpful and compassionate staff at Mercy Rehabilitation, Milwaukee, for their care of Beverly this past year, as well as Vitas Healthcare.

Family and Friends will gather at Holy Cross Cemetery West Chapel, 7301 W. Nash St. Milwaukee, WI 53216 on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 from 11:00 AM until the time of the Memorial Service at 11:45 AM. Military Honors will follow the Memorial Service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Fisher House Wisconsin (Milwaukee Veterans Administration) or the Milwaukee Rescue Mission appreciated.
