Carmella “Camille” Cascio

(nee Guiffre) Passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at St. Luke’s Hospital after a brief illness at the age of 107-1/2 years. Camille was born in Messina, Sicily on April 19, 1917 and came to the US through Ellis Island as a little girl.

She is preceded in death by her husband John Cascio in 2001 and by her parents Guiseppe and Cona (nee Santoro); her brothers Rosario (Regina) and Nick (Dorothy); and her sisters Rosaria “Rose” (John) Martell and Mary Guiffre.

Camille is survived by her loving daughter Marguerite (Leroy) Stanke; two grandchildren Carla (Tony Stonehouse) Stanke and David (Brandy) Stanke; four great-grandchildren: Alexis and Levi Stanke and Mimi and Felix Stanke Stonehouse; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grand and great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

Camille attended Lincoln High School for a brief time and then left school to get a job to help support her family. She married John Cascio on February 8, 1947 and helped John run three taverns over the years, was a waitress and ultimately retired from Briggs and Stratton in 1982 as a Supervisor of the Locks and Keys division.  She was a former member of the Italian Community Center and the Solomon Juneau Club.  She enjoyed volunteering for Festa Italiana and ran a bus trip with her husband John for over 10 years to the horse races as a fundraiser for the ICC and volunteered for other ICC activities in addition to church related fundraisers.

Her family wishes to thank the doctors and nursing staff at St. Luke’s Hospital and the entire staff and residents at Sinceri Senior Living (Layton Terrace) for their many acts of kindness friendship and compassion toward Camille.  Camille, or as we refer to her – Nani, was the matriarch of our family and is now at peace.  She will be forever loved and missed.
