Clayton W. Clark was born into eternal life Monday, February 11, 2002, at age 84.
Clayton was born January 22, 1918 in the town of North Bend, Wisconsin the son of Walter F. Clark and Elizabeth Syvertson Clark.
He taught in the Wisconsin public schools for 41 years as a band and chorus director. He was the retired owner of Clark?s Office Supply & Print Shop in Whitewater.
He grew up in Melrose, Wisconsin where graduated from high school and became an Eagle Scout. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison receiving a Bachelor?s Degree in American Institutions and a Master?s Degree in Education and Music.
A Veteran of World War II, Clark served with the 32nd Infantry Regiment of the 7th Division. He later was a member of the army Air Force Band at Moffett Field, California. He was active in the American Legion. He served as adjutant for Chapter 39 of the Disabled American Veterans.
He was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Palmyra where over the years, he served as usher, flute soloist, choir member, and religious education instructor.
He was instrumental in the formation of the Palmyra Eagle Community Band in which he performed. He was active in the Zor Concert Band of Madison and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Alumni Band.
He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa Honorary Education Society, Phi Eta Sigma, and Phi Kappa Phi, the Wisconsin Retired Teachers Association, the Jefferson County Retired Teachers Association, the Music Educators National Conference, the National Education Association, American Association of Retired Persons, the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic Knights, and the Palmyra Senior Citizens Club.
Clayton will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 55 years Rosanne nee Bates of Palmyra, family and friends. He is survived by five children, Rosemary Sprenger, Madison, Catherine Christopher Salimes, Brookfield, Therese? Tim Maney, Palmyra, Jane Scott Eikland, Fort Atkinson, and John Clark, Fort Atkinson. He is survived by nine grandchildren, Richard Rhonda Maney, Gregory Valerie Maney, Timothy Maney, Carla Maney, Joseph Maney, Christina Salimes, Christopher Clayton Salimes, Clark Eikland, Tricia Eikland, and one great-granddaughter, Ashley. He is also survived by a brother Gerald Inga Clark of Humbird and two sisters, Helen Forrest Goodenough of Melrose, and Alyce Bettis of Sparta, Sister in law Connie Clark of Galesville. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Spencer.
Family and friends may call to pay respects at Heritage Funeral Home, 320 W. Main Street, Palmyra on Friday, February 15, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. A visitation will also be held Saturday, February 16 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 919 W. Main Street, Palmyra. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 16, at 11:00 a.m. by Monsignor John H. Hebl at St. Mary Catholic Church followed by burial at St. Mary?s cemetery.
