Schwab Riedl, Dorothy
Passed away at the age of 87 on September 26, 2015. Dorothy was born on January 23, 1928 to Leroy and Marie (nee Schroeder) Schwab in Milwaukee. She graduated from Bay View High School in 1945, having lived her entire high school experience during the war. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history and her teaching certificate from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
After living a time in New York City she moved back to Wisconsin to teach in Madison. There she met and married Eugene Riedl. They moved to Hortonville, Wisconsin were she became a substitute teacher and a full time mom. They brought up four children in Hortonville. Dorothy always said that Hortonville was a great place to raise a family. There she had many friends and was involved in many activities including Book Club and Bridge Club. She was a member and active volunteer for the Outagamie County Historical Society and worked at the Grignon Mansion historic site.
Later in life she returned to college and earned a Master’s Degree in Library Science from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Two of her fellow students at UW-O at that time were her sons. She participated in graduation ceremonies alongside her oldest child.
Dorothy moved back to her beloved Bay View neighborhood of Milwaukee to work as a children’s librarian in the Milwaukee Public Library. She became an enthusiastic supporter of Historic Milwaukee.
Dorothy will be remembered for her quick wit and delightful sense of humor, her wide ranging intellect and love of learning, her independence, and her passion for history and the arts. She was a devoted baseball fan, following the Milwaukee Braves and Milwaukee Brewers. She loved big band music and old movies. By far the greatest love and joy in her life were her children and grandchildren who will miss her dearly.
