Elerida “Lela” Rivera

September 16th, 1928 – February 17th, 2021

Elerida Rivera who loved to be called “Mami” by her children departed her loving family and friends on February 17th, 2021 at the age of 92. She was called “Titi” by her nieces and nephews and (Doña Lela) by family friends and the community.

Elerida Rivera, daughter of Maria Santiago and Juan Velez, was born in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, on September 16, 1928, the day after the famous hurricane “San Felipe”. She was the eighth of nine children and the twin sister of Maximino Velez, who God bless his soul, past away on February 5, 2005 at the age of 76.

Loving mother of Leo Angel Rivera III (Rosa), Georgina Rivera, Malu Burtin (Anthony), Elmin Rivera (Denise) and Soraida Rivera. Grandmother to 9 grandchildren: Jorge “Papito”, Fernando, Alexandra “Lexi”, Kassandra, Victoria, Natasha, Antonio, Vincent and Leo “Lil Leo”. 7 great-grandchildren: Azriela, Josiah, Aiden, Cristiano, Leila, Arieli and Elisa.

Due to the high demands of her home, she was only able to attend grade school. After the passing of her father, she had to take on a larger roll of taking care of her brothers and sisters, cleaning, cooking, and hand washing clothes on the rocks by the river for the family. In addition, she had the responsibilities of cooking and taking food to the men whom worked on the family farm. After the death of her mother she also raised her nieces and nephews, Miriam, Milagros, Jose Ramon and Cesar. She quickly became well known for her great cooking and for being a wonderful daughter.

In June of 1956, she married and moved to La Plaza de Ponce, Puerto Rico taking along with her, her niece, Miriam Plaza. Nine months later, on March 18, 1957, Leo Angel Rivera III, her first of five children was born.

In November of 1957, her family decided to relocate to Milwaukee, WI. Her nephew, Eliezer Martinez and friends of the family Severo & Gilberto Rivera later accompanied them. She nurtured them all as they started a new life.

She loved having company and anyone who has come in contact with Lela and visited her home has felt the gift of her hospitality. You couldn’t visit her home and not eat or have a cup of “café” even if you had already eaten. Therefore, most were prepared to eat! She showered everyone with so much love, affection, joy and laughter. Her neighbors often said she lit up the hallways with her smile when she greeted them. She was a blessing to everyone!

We are so blessed, honored and privileged to have her as our mother. We were raised with humility! Our home was always clean, we were well fed and she instilled in us everlasting values and morals. The love and affection she showered her family with was truly unconditional. Her legacy and memories will live on in every family member and in each and every person she came in contact with.

Mami, we will forever love and hold you dear to our hearts and you will never be forgotten!!!

Elerida Rivera, a quien le encantaba que sus hijos la llamaran “Mami”, dejó a su amada familia el 17 de febrero de 2021 a la edad de 92 años. Sus sobrinas y sobrinas la llamaron “Titi” y los amigos de la familia y la comunidad la llamaron “Doña Lela”.

Elerida Rivera, hija de Maria Santiago y de Juan Velez, nació en Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, el 16 de Septiembre de 1928, el día después del famoso huracán “San Felipe”. Ella era la octava de nueve niños y la hermana gemela de Maximino Velez que, Dios bendiga su alma, paso más allá el 5 de Febrero de 2005 en la edad de 76 anos.

Amorosa madre de Leo Angel Rivera III (Rosa), Georgina Rivera, Malu Burtin (Anthony), Elmin Rivera (Denise) and Soraida Rivera. Abuela de 9 nietos y nietas: Jorge “Papito”, Fernando, Alexandra “Lexi”, Kassandra, Victoria, Natasha, Antonio, Vincent and Leo “Lil Leo”. 7 bisnietos & bisnietas: Azriela, Josiah, Aiden, Cristiano, Leila, Arieli and Elisa.

Debido a las altas demandas de su hogar, ella solo podía asistir a la escuela primaria. Después que su padre murió, ella adquirió responsabilidades más grande tomando el cuidado de sus hermanos, la limpieza, cocinar y las ropas que se lavaban de la mano en las rocas por el río para la familia. Además, ella tenía las responsabilidades de cocinar y de llevar los alimentos a los hombres que trabajaron en la finca de la familia. Después de la muerte de su madre, ella también crió a sus sobrinas y sobrinos, Miriam, Milagros, Jose Ramon y a Cesar. Ella fue rápidamente muy conocida por ser una gran cocinera y por ser una hija maravillosa.

En Junio de 1956, ella se casó y se trasladó a un hogar en La Plaza de Ponce, Puerto Rico y tomaba adelante con ella, su sobrina, Miriam. Nueve meses más adelante, el 18 de Marzo de 1957, Leo Ángel Rivera III, su primer de cinco niños nació en Puerto Rico.

En Noviembre de 1957, su familia decidió trasladarse a Milwaukee, WI. Su sobrino, Eliezer Martínez y amigos de la familia, Severo y Gilberto Rivera los acompañaron más adelante. Ella los consoló todos mientras que vinieron a comenzar una nueva vida aquí.

Le encantaba tener compañía y cualquiera que haya conocido a Lela y haya visitado su casa ha sentido el regalo de su hospitalidad. No podías visitar su casa y no comer ni tomar una taza de café, incluso si ya hubieras comido! Por lo tanto tenia que venir preparado para comer! Ella también riegaba a cada persona con tanto amor, afecto, alegría y risas. Sus vecinos siempre decían que iluminaba los pasillos con su sonrisa cuando los saludaba. ¡Ella fue una bendición para todos!

Estamos muy bendecidos, honrados y privilegiados de tenerla como nuestra madre. Fuimos criados con humildad! Nuestra casa siempre estaba limpia, estábamos bien alimentados y ella nos inculcó valores y morales eternos. El amor y el afecto con que colmó a su familia fue verdaderamente incondicional. Su legado y recuerdos vivirán en cada miembro de la familia y en todas y cada una de las personas que la conocieron.

Mami, te amaremos por siempre! Estaras muy cerca de nuestros corazones y nunca te olvidaremos!
