Floyd Martin Leonard

Floyd Leonard, 91, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Floyd was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He loved his wife of over 65 years, Marlene (nee Rohrschieb), along with his daughters Jane (Paul) Soto and Maureen (Kevin) Marks. He was also the very proud grandfather of Ryan and Brayden Marks, dear uncle of Jean Oberle and David Hynek, and brother-in-law of Norbert Hynek. Floyd is preceded in death by his parents Martin and Goldie (nee Schmidt) Leonard, sister LaVerne Leonard, and sister-in-law Amber Hynek.

Floyd was born at home on July 25, 1933, in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. He continued to live out all of his 91 years in Oak Creek and made lasting contributions to the community as it evolved from a small, rural township to a large, bustling suburb.

Floyd attended Hillside School from 1st to 8th grade. He proudly shared the history of this one-room schoolhouse with any newcomer to the community, and his class photographs still hang on the walls inside this historical school building. Floyd graduated from South Milwaukee High School in 1951. At the time, Oak Creek did not have a high school, so Floyd always told stories of the various ways he would get to and from school in the cold winter months.

After graduating high school, Floyd proudly served in the US Army during the Korean War. He wore his Korean Veteran caps and shirts with pride, and was blessed to go on a Stars & Stripes Honor Flight with his daughter Jane.

After completing his military service, Floyd returned to Oak Creek and married the love of his life, Marlene. Together they built their forever home right beside the home where Floyd was born and raised. It was here that they raised their family and created many decades of wonderful memories.

Floyd dedicated his life to his family and his community. He first worked for Line Material in South Milwaukee. He then became a civil engineer for the City of Oak Creek and had a hand in planning the future growth of the city. Floyd’s commitment to Oak Creek went much further than that. He worked tirelessly to promote the establishment and construction of the Oak Creek Community Center and was a long-time member of the Oak Creek Kiwanis Club, American Legion Post, Lion’s Club, 4H, and a wide variety of other community based organizations. In 1995, Floyd had the distinguished honor of being named Oak Creek Citizen of the Year.

Floyd was also a very talented musician. He learned to play the piano as a young boy and then became a very accomplished accordion player. His band, “The Lenotes”, was a popular feature at many weddings, festivals and family gatherings over the years. In his later years, he was often found enjoying polka music at various festivals and watching his favorite polka shows in the comfort of his chair at home.

Throughout his life, Floyd also had a strong passion for tilling the land and reaping his crops. Although the size of his beautiful gardens got smaller over the years, he would still proudly show off his annual prized zucchinis, potatoes and a wide variety of other vegetables and flowers. When Floyd’s old knees could no longer support him safely out to his gardens, he turned to his trusty John Deere riding mower to taxi him there.

Floyd was also an avid Green Bay Packers fan and proudly displayed his shareholder plaque where he could admire it during every televised game. No matter if it was a winning season or not, he would stay optimistic and speak fondly of all his favorite players.

Floyd loved his wife, children and grandchildren with all his heart, always standing by their side through every challenge and every accomplishment. His steadfast support and encouragement were constants in their lives, reminding them they could always count on him no matter what. He will be deeply missed.

A Memorial Service will take place for Floyd at Grace Lutheran Church, 3381 E. Puetz Road, Oak Creek, WI 53154. on Monday, February 10, 2025 at Noon. Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until the service begins at Noon. A private interment will take place the following day at Oakwood Rest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Grace Lutheran Church or The Stars and Stripes Honor Flight of Wisconsin are greatly appreciated.

I want to extend my deepest sympathy and my condolences for the loss of Floyd. I had the absolute pleasure of knowing and being a neighbor to this beautiful family for 34 years of my 41 years here on earth. Floyd provided so many wonderful contributions to my hometown . Floyd and Marlene created such a beautiful family; even giving me the pleasure to having their daughter Jane as one of my favorite teachers. I’m so very proud and honored to have had Floyd be an absolute blessing in my life. Floyd I will still give you a friendly wave each time I pass your home.
