Genoveva “Genie” Menendez,
74, died Wed. May 1, 2019 at Zilber Family Hospice in Wauwatosa, Wis. after a short illness. Genie was born May 20, 1944 in Cuba, the daughter of Rosendo and Maria Rodriguez.
Genie came to the United States as a teenager and did clerical work in Chicago for a hospital and law firm. While working in Chicago, she met Raul Menendez and the two were married on June 24, 1967. They were together for 41 years, until Raul passed away in September of 2008.
The couple had two children, Ana and Paul Menendez, both currently living in Milwaukee. Genie was enjoying retirement with her children after working 34 years for the state of Illinois at the Second District Appellate Court in Elgin, Ill.
Genie is survived by her children, Ana and Paul, of Milwaukee; her sister Maria Luisa Rodriguez (Nicanor Garcia) of Miami and several cousins in Chicago and Pompano Beach, Fla. She was preceded in death by a cousin, Mark Zannoni, and her husband.
A Funeral Mass will be held Sat. May 18 at 10 a.m. at St. Hilary Catholic Church in Chicago. Interment will follow in June at Miami (Fla.) Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Bridging the Gap of Aurora or the Illinois chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
