Yahn, Gerald Herbert
“Jerry” to family and friends, passed away surrounded by his family on the evening of December 27, 2017, at the age of 84. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on November 22, 1933, Jerry was the son of the late Herbert and Edna Yahn. Jerry married Carol Murray, the daughter of the late Charles and Rose Murray in 1955.
Jerry worked for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, retiring after 43 years as Head Pressman. He was President of the Graphic Pressman’s Union-Local 23 and served as mediator during contracts.
Jerry was knowledgeable, a world traveler, and enjoyed sharing his trivia with visitors while giving tours of his beloved Milwaukee and volunteering at the County Historical Society.
He proudly served in the Naval Reserves for eight years.
Jerry was president of the Boys Tech Alumni. Dedicated to education, and as a commissioner of the new Bradley Tech High School, he was instrumental in forming the skilled trades curriculum.
Singing was his hobby. He was a member of church choirs and sang with the Festival City, Heart of Harmony, and Heart of Florida Barbershop Choruses (SPEBSQSA), being honored as the Barbershopper of the Year.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Carol, and their four children, Kitty (Bob) Long, Dave (Jackie), Susan (Paul) Krystek, and Rick. Also survived by his grandchildren, Jennifer, Rachel (Sean), Sean, Shelby, Jason (Caitlin), Bethany, Nathan, Ryan, and Natalie. He was preceded in death by grandsons Christopher and Matthew. His warmth and endearing smile will be missed by the entire family.
Services will be held at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church on Saturday, January 6, 2018, with visitation from 9 – 11 a.m., funeral at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 6801 W. Forest Home Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53220.
