Dr. Henry Bruno Wengelewski, 86, of Greendale, Wisconsin, succumbed to chronic pulmonary disease at St. Luke’s Hospital surrounded by his family on April 22nd, 2015.

Dr. Henry (Hank) is survived by his wife Dorothy of 59 years, daughters Cindi (Mark) Petre, Kathy (Bob) Zanotelli, Vicki (John) Saber, and Chris (Jeff) VonDerVellen, sons Henry (Terri), Carl (Julie), and Tom (Tara) Wengelewski, grandchildren Benjamin (Diana), Jonathan, Sarah, Laura (Charlie), Hannah, Matthew Petre; Patrick, Rachel, Megan Wengelewski; Zachery, Jessica, Valerie Zanotelli; Alex “a.k.a.Judy”, Melissa, Emma, Olivia Saber; Peter, Bryan, Daniel, Michael VonDerVellen; Kayla, Bella, Henry Wengelewski; Tyler, Ryan Wengelewski, great-grandchildren Mary, Mark, Amy, Anna and Eve Petre, sister Carol, brother Donald, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by parents Boleslaw and Victoria, brothers Anthony, Lawrence, Chester, sisters Stella and Violet.

Dr. Henry was born in Chicago February 7th, 1929, graduating from Loyola University-Chicago in 1950 and Loyola University Medical School 1954 as valedictorian. He enjoyed playing the accordion his whole life, playing for weddings and parties during high school and college years. He did his medical internship at Milwaukee County General Hospital. Dr. Henry served in the U.S. Army Medical Corp as a Captain from 1955 – 1957 and was a resident at the Veteran’s Hospital in Milwaukee from 1957 – 1961. He was in private practice as a general surgeon working at St. Luke’s Hospital, West Allis Memorial Hospital, and St. Francis Hospital where he was Chief of Surgery 1977 – 1980, 1981 – 1982, and Chief of Staff 1984 -1985. He was on the team for the first open heart surgery in Wisconsin. Dr. Henry retired from practice in 1999. He was a fellow in the American College of Surgeons, a member of the State Medical Society of Wisconsin, and certified by the American Board of Surgery.

Dr. Henry enjoyed tennis at Village Club in Greendale and Moreland Tennis Club; he was an avid golfer at Tuckaway Country Club, and a life-long reader with a passion for history: always with a book in hand since childhood. He loved spending time with his family and playing with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, being known as the Dunkin’ Donut and Kopp’s Custard Grandpa. He had homes in Greendale, Wisconsin and Largo, Florida. He was strong in his faith and a member of St. Alphonsus parish for 50 years.

Dr. Henry was loved by all who knew him and will be dearly missed by his wife, family, and friends.

The family would like to thank Dr. Gronski and his associates, Dr. Williams, and the amazing staff at St. Lukes hospital.

Visitation will take place on Thursday, April 30th, from 4-8PM at the FUNERAL HOME. Mass of Christian burial will take place on Friday, May 1st, at 10AM at ST. ALPHONSUS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 6000 W. Loomis Rd, Greendale.
