Hubert Leslie Hauerwas

Hubert L. Hauerwas, born August 13, 1924, in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. Passed away peacefully at Meadowmere Assisted Living in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, on August 12, 2012, just one day shy of his 88th birthday. Cared for in his last days by Heartland Hospice. Preceded in death by loving parents, Frank and Clara Hauerwas, and brothers, Alfred, John, and Edwin infant. Brother-in-law of Eleanore Hauerwas Henderson, NV. Wonderful Godfather and uncle of Jim Linda Hauerwas Naples, FL. Special uncle of Kathi Steve Zellers Henderson, NV, Mary Jerry Glowacki Irwin, ID, and Bill Hauerwas Oak Creek, WI. Dearest great-uncle of Betsy Hauerwas Cudahy, WI and Jordan Hauerwas Minneapolis, MN.

Hubert Hubie was proud of his Oak Creek heritage. The Hauerwas family was one of the original pioneer families in Oak Creek. Hubie and his brothers, Alfie and John, worked the family farm on 13th Street for many years prior to starting their own business, Hauerwas Bros. Texaco, at the corners of South Howell Avenue and West Puetz Road in 1957. Friends of Hauerwas Bros. Texaco fondly referred to the station as “City Hall,” where many stories, politics, and town gossip were discussed. Despite its closing in 1986, friends and family of the station remained very close.

Hubie enjoyed the first snow fall of every winter season and peacefully watched the summer sun set on his beloved garden from the back porch of his Cream City brick home on the original homestead on South 13th Street. You would often find Hubie cursing the rabbits under the watchful eyes of his fondest friends, all the many dogs that were his best companions, including Tippy, Corkie, Butchie, Woody, and Rocky. Hubie loved his pugs the best and shared many a “Double-Stack” with them in his warm kitchen.

Watching the Packers and grilling out on Sundays with Alfie and Eleanore and all the kids was a great time for Hubie. His niece, Mary, would often know the time of “night” he would arrive home after socializing on a Saturday night as she would hear the squealing of his brakes just before he missed his driveway entrance. Even though Hubie did not marry or have his own children, he was a wonderful, caretaker and loving brother to John, for whom he cared until John’s death in 1992. Hubie was an excellent uncle to Jim, Captain Kate, Mary, Bill, Jordan, and Betsy.

In later life, Hubie spent a great deal of time with his nieces and nephews, and especially, his great-niece Betsy and great-nephew Jordan. Hubie taught Betsy and Jordan a swift game of cards using pennies from the buffet drawer. He showed Betsy the finer points of “driving” on the race track behind his house. He was Jordan’s designated chauffeur on the days when he missed the school bus and was a great babysitter on those “special” days off from middle school. These children were blessed to have their great-uncle attend their school events and shared in their successes as they have grown into young adults.

Hubie will be sadly missed by many friends and family, including, Linda Hauerwas, Steve Zellers, Jerry Glowacki, Kyle Kmeciak, Lee Wilson, Joe Dorsey, Jerry Ashbaugh, Jack and John Brewer, Chuck and Audrey Hauerwas, John Voorhees, Richard Hauerwas, Kenny “BoomBoom” Hauerwas, and many more.

Hubert Hauerwas was a class act. He showed character, resolve, and dignity throughout his entire life. He often had the greatest one-liners. In particular, he would remind us, “It only costs a little more to go first class…you just don’t go as far.”

Hubie, you will be missed…

Visitation Saturday, August 18, 2012 from 9-10 am at the funeral home with a prayer service at 10 am. Interment to follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
