It is impossible to distill 95 years into a few paragraphs – childhood, military service, education, career, marriage and family – Jim’s experiences in each stage of life made Jim the man he was. A few years ago, Jim wrote down some of his experiences that he felt were especially significant in his life – he wanted them to be included in his obituary. In Jim’s own words:

In the beginning of his senior year of high school, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, serving from 1942 to 1945. At that time, he was discharged as a disabled veteran having spent three months at the Navel Hospital in Corona, California. During WWII, the Coast Guard was involved in convoy duty in the Atlantic and landing Marines in the Pacific.

Jim then enrolled at Northwestern University, graduating from Kellogg School of Business in 1949. He joined GSA, becoming President before retirement. GSA were an agent for foreign steamship lines caring cargo from the Great Lakes to all parts of the world. GSA also chartered vessels to carry U.S. Govt relief goods worldwide.

Jim was a board member and chairman of St. Rose Residence, founded in 1848 as an orphanage. It became a home and school for mentally disturbed girls. Jim used to say “If we save one in ten, we are fortunate.”

Traveling was a passion for Jim and his wife, Marie. They traveled worldwide, finally settling on Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where they first visited in 1956. They spent many winters there.
