Fortier, Joseph Ernest.
77 passed away on Saturday afternoon, June 6, 2009 at Mount Carmel Nursing Home in Greenfield, WI after a short illness. Joe was born in Rhinelander, WI on April 1, 1932, son of Esden and Opal neeHoffhein Fortier. In August 1966, he was united in marriage to the former Gertrude Kolodziejski. He was a graduate of Rhinelander High School and served in the United States Army from Feb 1950 until Mar 1953 as part of the Military Police. He received an Honorable Discharge, holder of the Golden Dragon Ruler of the 180th Meridian, in 1952 participated in Operation Ivy Atomic tests at Eniwetok Proving grounds, Marshall Island He worked for the City of West Allis Public Works until retirement in 1992. Joe was an avid bowler and golfer. He enjoyed working part-time at the Old Byerly Bowl in West Allis. He was quite gregarious and enjoyed the people he met there. Joe was interested in a myriad of different topics and ideas and loved talking about them all.

Survivors include his four sister’s, Vaunette O’Leary Kenneth of West Allis, WI, Jeanne Sutton Douglas of Las Vegas, Nevada, Rosemary Butterfield Richard of Rhinelander, WI and Deanna Schliesman Paul of Holmen, WI and in particular his devoted nephew, Kelly O’Leary who was a comfort and friend. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends to numerous to list.

He was preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife, Trudy and his three brothers William Fortier, James Fortier and Michael Fortier.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, June 12th from 1:30-4PM at the FUNERAL HOME. Private interment.
