Karl Fletcher Powell

January 19, 1936 to July 28, 2023
Karl Fletcher Powell of New Berlin passed away peacefully on July 28, 2023, surrounded by his family.  Karl was born on January 19, 1936 to Fletcher and Levora (nee Smith) Powell.  Karl was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years Carol Jean (nee Allen) and his brother David Wayne Powell.  He is survived by his sons David (Janice), James (Diane) and Mark (Michelle), grandchildren Erin (Brian) Stoltenberg, Kelsey (Kevin) Zeeck, Jake Powell, Reed Powell, Jordan Weber, Jared Weber, Jayce Weber, great-grandson Julian Zeeck, sister Marjorie Ann Fleming, sister-in-law Coleen (Larry) Jordan, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Karl was born in Fredonia, Kansas and his family eventually moved to Madison, Kansas, where he grew up. Karl attended Emporia State Teachers College and earned his bachelor’s degree in Retailing and subsequently his master’s degree in Marketing Education.  While at Emporia State, he met Carol and they began their 60+ years together.
Karl was a lifelong educator and teacher.  He started his career in education as a high school marketing teacher in Columbus, Kansas.  In 1965, Karl accepted a job with the Milwaukee Public Schools to establish and develop their DECA/Marketing Education program.  He spent 27 years at MPS and taught graduate classes for UW-Whitewater. Even in retirement, he consulted with school districts in his area of expertise.
Karl was always willing to serve on local, state, and national boards or committees. He was a national board member and president of both Marketing Education Association and DECA. He was a member of the New Berlin School Board for nine years and was a member of his condo association and church boards.
Karl spent many hours over many years coaching his sons’ little league baseball and basketball teams. He loved supporting his grandchildren in their many activities.
Karl was an avid golfer, big Packer fan, liked to read, play cards and was known for his kidding sense of humor.  Karl was a friend, colleague, mentor, and coach and touched many lives.
A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, August 19th from 10-11:30am at FOREST PARK PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 2300 S. SUNNYSLOPE RD, NEW BERLIN, followed by a celebration of life at 11:30am.
As Karl would often say, “Keep Smiling!”
In lieu of flowers donations in Karl’s name can be made to the New Berlin Education Foundation Scholarship Fund or The Wisconsin Junior Golf Foundation.

    Very sorry to hear of the passing of Karl Powell. He was a good neighbor and the quintessential family man.
