Laimonis H.
Andersons
Laimonis Andersons of Oconomowoc died Tuesday Oct. 19, 2010 at Angels-Grace of Oconomowoc at the age of 88. He was born June 4, 1922, the son of Hermanis and Anna Andersons in Latvia.
Laim left his homeland Latvia during WWII to avoid the Russsian occupation. After 5 years in DP camps in Germany, he moved to Australia and waited for 10 years to emigrate legally to the United States. He greatly valued his American citizenship.
In Chicago he was employed as a seal engineer by Crane Packing Co. and he retired to Oconomowoc Wi.
He had a great love of nature and spent many happy hours caring for his garden. He was very supportive of his wife’s artwork and activities. He and his wife were very active in the Latvian exile community and active in helping their home country Latvia regain independence.
To people with an appreciation for history and a healthy distrust of the ruling class, he was an avuncular character, always quick with a joke or a witty retort. Laim maintianed the full use of his faculties until the end, with most of his asides soaring over the heads of the srangers attempting to care for him, to the point that they may have wondered whether he was being delusional. To those of us who knew and loved him, this was Laim being Laim, never giving an inch to the detriment of his beliefs, and expecting you to get the joke. If you didn’t, that was your loss.
Laim played volleyball until he was almost 80 and made a lasting impression on hundreds of people.
Laim will be sadly missed by his wife Ilga of 38 years, daughter Daina Scott of Ft. Lauderdale Fl, grandson Bruce along with 2 great-grandchildren Kyle and Laurel of Lansing Iowa, and one brother Dailis Andersons in Latvia, along with nieces Sarma and Baiba and nephew Andris in Australia, and many friends in the America, Australia and Latvia.
A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, October 30, at MILWAUKEE LATVIAN EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH 1853 N. 75th St., from 10 – 11 AM. Memorial Service will follow at 11 AM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to the Museum of Occupation OMFAor Milwaukee Latvian Ev. Lutheran Church.
