Lorraine Bevan Horst was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, daughter of the Rev. Mr. Vernon Bevan and Anita deMartin Bevan. Lorry spent the early years of her childhood in that New England State.
After graduating from the eighth grade her family moved to Cleveland, Ohio. Lorry attended Cleveland West High School. After graduation she enrolled in Oberlin College where she met her husband-to-be Bob. Bob and Lorry were married the summer before her junior year and Bob’s senior year.
After Lorry’s graduation from Oberlin College they lived in Remsen Corners, Ohio where their son Craig was born. Shortly after they moved to Monroeville, Ohio where daughter Catherine was born. The next move was to Greendale, WI. Once the children were established in school Lorry attended Alverno College for the courses required for her to be accredited as a public school teacher in Wisconsin. Lorry taught 4th grade in the Highland View Elementary School in Greendale. Lorry continued her teaching at Highland View even after their move to Wauwatosa. Lorry took early retirement from teaching in 1989.
Lorry then volunteered for several years at The Gathering, providing meals for the homeless in Milwaukee. She then volunteered as a docent at the Milwaukee Art Museum, being honored as Docent of the Year at one point and awarded ’emeritus status’ at the conclusion of her volunteer service.
Lorry loved travel, both nationally and internationally, having a particular fondness for Great Britain and France. As much as she loved travel she loved even more, and felt nourished by, the natural world around her. Lorry was an avid gardener and a nearly indefatigable walker in any natural setting she came upon. After Bob’s retirement they divided their time between their home in Wauwatosa and their three season home in Door County. Lorry took every advantage of investigating and enjoying the natural settings so prevalent in that County.
Lorry was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2014 precipitating our move to Tudor Oaks. After a few months of independent living Lorry became a resident in Memory Care Unit. She later became a resident in Silverado, Brookfield and finally at Autumn Leaves, Franklin where she died on Monday, November 18, 2019. We want to thank the staff and aides at each of these locations for the personal attention and professional care that Lorry experienced.
Lorry was preceded in death by her son Craig, and is survived by her husband Bob, daughter Catherine, grandson Warren Triantafelo and sister Ruth Bevan Dunner. Lorry will be deeply missed by those in her family and many who came to know her along life’s way.
Services will be held on Saturday, December 14th in the Tudor Oaks Retirement Community, S77 W12929 McShane Dr., Muskego, WI. Visitation will be held from 1-2PM with the Funeral Service at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, if desired, memorials to The Gathering, Milwaukee Art Museum, Door County Land Trust, or the Alzheimer’s Association of Southeast Wisconsin are appreciated.
Our deepest sympathy to Bob and family on hearing the news of Lori’s passing recently. We have many fond memories growing up with the Horst family in Greendale.
Prayers and Peace
Bob, I am holding you in loving prayers in the midst of your loss. I remember Lorry and her keen intelligence and sweet nature very well. I know how much she was appreciated by the rest of the Wisconsin Conference family including my Mom and Dad. I praise God for the peace in which she now lives. May that same peace be yours and be with your family. God bless you, Bob!
On behalf of everyone here at the Alzheimer’s Association – thank you so much for thinking of us at this time of loss to your family. Memorial donations made in Lorraine’s name will be put to immediate use serving families and supporting research. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
