Robert "Bob"
Ver Brugge

Robert “Bob” was born on October 4, 1929 in Milwaukee to Michael and Elnore Ver Brugge.  Robert served honorably in the Navy from 1947-1951, which included service in the Korean War aboard the USS Haynsworth.  Later in life, Robert attended yearly reunions for the USS Haynsworth which took place at various cities across the country, being reunited with those he served as well as getting to know those who served our country on the Haynsworth after him.  Robert also participated in the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight in October 2017 with his Son, Michael.  After his return, Robert declared this experience as one of the “best days ever.”  During much of his adult life, Robert was employed as an Operating Engineer for Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewage District, retiring in October 1989.  For many years, Robert was an active member of the American Legion and Moose Club.  Robert lived in Milwaukee the majority of his life, spending his last few years in Winona, Minnesota, near his Daughter, Kris, and her family.  Robert was preceded in death by his parents and beloved brother, Donald (Rosemary) Ver Brugge.  Robert is survived by his sister Sharon, children Michael (Liz) Ver Brugge, Ellen (Joe) Mantsch, Eva Bett, and Kris (Michael) Lynch, grandchildren Nicole, Morgan, Antonio, Maggie, Bobby, Claire, and Jameson, and great grandchildren Elise and Jackson.  Robert will be remembered by his family and friends for many reasons.  One of Robert’s most recent sayings is a good lesson for us all:  “No one is better, they are just different.”  Robert’s family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Sugar Loaf Senior Living (where he was known by many as “Coach”) and Mayo Clinc Health System Home Hospice for the care and support they provided to Robert and his family.

Visitation to be held at Heritage Funeral Home-Bay View (3801 S. Howell Ave. Milwaukee) on Thursday, 10/19 from 9-10am with service to follow.  Burial with military honors to take place at 11am at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Union Grove.
