Rose Nyamekye Antwi

Our darling mother, Mrs. Rose Afia Nyamekye Antwi, sadly passed away on July 14th, 2023, at the age of 79. Rose was born in 1943 in the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana where her parents were farmers. Her mom named her “Nyamekye” because she saw her as a gift from God and nicknamed her “Nkwagyedom” meaning ‘savior of many’ because she was born into a Christian home. Soon after her birth, our grandmother returned with her daughter to her hometown Jamasi, where Rose would grow up into a beautiful village belle.

Several wealthy men in the town wanted to take Rose’s hand in marriage but Rose’s heart was with her high school sweetheart, a penniless, hot-headed young man who went on to become a captain and a commander in the army. They married at a tender age and had five children together.

Rose was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and a God-fearing woman who devoted her time to God and family. She stayed home to take care of her children till we were old enough and safe to be left alone with caretakers before working as a Teller at Merchant Bank in Kumasi, Ghana. She resigned from her work at the bank so that she could babysit her grandbabies, and that is why she relocated to the United States.

Few facts about Rose that will forever stay with us among other things: Rose loved to cook and bake, and her famous meat pie was loved by all who came to eat at her table because they were so good! Even while she was in pain, Rose would stand on her feet for hours baking meat pies. Rose loved God. She inculcated the love of God in her children and grandchildren. Rose loved going to Church, she and her grandson Kevin, were sometimes the only congregation present during the genesis of the Church of Pentecost, Milwaukee. Her desire was for all her grandkids to become pastors. She loved to read, and I will miss sharing storybooks with her. Rose loved history and never forgot dates, even though, she mistook one of her granddaughter’s birthdays for May 5th instead of May 3rd, she never missed calling her on May 5th.  Rose would always sing gospel songs, even though she didn’t have the best singing voice. Rose was so kind and cared so deeply for people that our friends became her children and some even lived with us till they were financially sound enough to move on with their lives. As a result of this, Rose has biological and non-biological children and grandchildren mourning her today.

Maa, as we affectionately called her, was a selfless fighter, she fought a good fight until The Lord called her home. We know she is now free from pain and is happily singing her favorite song with the angels in Heaven.

On a hill far away, stood an old rugged Cross
The emblem of suff’ring and shame
And I love that old Cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain

So I’ll cherish the old rugged Cross
Till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged Cross
And exchange it some day for a crown

Oh, that old rugged Cross so despised by the world
Has a wondrous attraction for me
For the dear Lamb of God, left his Glory above
To bear it to dark Calvary

So I’ll cherish the old rugged Cross
Till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged Cross
And exchange it some day for a crown

In the old rugged Cross, stain’d with blood so divine
A wondrous beauty I see
For the dear Lamb of God, left his Glory above
To pardon and sanctify me

So I’ll cherish the old rugged Cross
Till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged Cross
And exchange it some day for a crown

To the old rugged Cross, I will ever be true
Its shame and reproach gladly bear
Then He’ll call me some day to my home far away
Where his glory forever I’ll share

So I’ll cherish the old rugged Cross
Till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged Cross
And exchange it some day for a crown
