William J. Rauschenberger

July 13, 1947 – February 7, 2025

William J. Rauschenberger (Bill), 77, of Franklin WI, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Friday, February 7, 2025. Bill was born July 13, 1947, in Milwaukee, WI, the fourth son of the late Ray and Ernella (Retzer) Rauschenberger. Bill was united in marriage to the girl he met on a blind date, Margaret (Peg) Poulsen, on December 29, 1973. Together, they became the devoted parents of two daughters: Megan Rauschenberger and Amanda (Brian) Klumb. Bill was the ultimate “girl dad” who adored his daughters beyond measure. An extraordinary nurturer, he provided hugs when they were sad, pep talks when discouraged, and warm blankets when not feeling well. Bill was also devoted to all his furry daughters over the years, often commenting on his interesting life with all females, including pets!

Bill graduated from Rufus King High School with the class of 1965 and attended Carroll University for a time, but he found his true calling when he joined the Milwaukee Police Department in 1969. While on duty as a motorcycle officer, he was injured when hit by a car.  Afterwards, he worked a number of limited duty positions at the department, ultimately retiring from the Communications Bureau when his physical limitations became too much. He mourned leaving the MPD, as it was a career he loved! In retirement, since he was still a young man, he took up many hobbies…some of which delighted his family and some they found a little bit annoying. The biggest gift was that he was available 24/7 for the ladies in his life.

Bill is survived by his wife, Peg, daughters, Meg and Mandy, and three grandchildren – Evan, Audrey, and Leah Klumb. He enjoyed a special bond with his son-in-law, Brian Klumb, who he said saved him from being alone with all women. Bill was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, John, Robert, and Richard. He is also survived by countless other dear relatives and friends. Bill leaves behind a great legacy of laughter and humor. There was no moment too small nor no tough time too serious for a joke. His wit will live on in the stories that are told and the inside jokes that are kept alive.

The family wants to express their deep gratitude to Aurora At Home Hospice, who made it possible to have Bill cared for in the comfort of his own home. Special thanks to Registered Nurse Cindi and Home Health Aide Amanda for their loving care and the many jokes they shared with Bill. The family is also thankful for the staff and residents of Creek Side Manor Assisted Living for their kindness and care during his stay with them.

A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 15. 2025, at St. Thomas of Canterbury Episcopal Church, 7255 W. Grange Ave., Greendale, WI. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 AM until mass begins. Because of Bill’s strong commitment to the education, development, and support of women, the family is requesting that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Alverno College (www.alverno.edu/donate or Advancement Office, Alverno College, P.O. Box 343922, Milwaukee, WI, 53234-3922). Peg, Meg, and Mandy are all alumna of Alverno, whose undergraduate programs are for women only. Their Alverno educations transformed their lives and their futures.

Bill was truly a unique personality.. There wasn’t a time when anyone walked away from a conversation with Bill that they didn’t have a smile on their face and perhaps some confusion in their brain. His humor and knack for spiraling the conversation in another direction was legendary. Bill challenged you to engage and it was always a thoughtful and delightful experience.
We pray for Peg, Megan, Mandy, and Brian that the precious years they have shared with Bill will continue to keep him close. Our family has forty-eight years of wonderful memories of raising our kids and sharing some great times with the Rauschenbergers. Evan, Audrey, and Leah are all old enough to remember Bill and will be able to carry his wisdom, humor, and love with them on their journey.
